If you’re searching for tattoo Sydney price, you’re probably planning your next piece and want to know what to expect cost-wise. The truth is, tattoo pricing in Sydney can vary significantly depending on factors like size, style, placement, and the artist’s experience.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through what impacts the cost of a tattoo in Sydney, the average price range, and how to plan your budget so you don’t get caught off guard at the studio.
How Are Tattoo Prices Calculated in Sydney?
Most Sydney tattoo studios charge either by the hour or per piece. Hourly rates are typical for custom work or large pieces, while small tattoos may be priced as a flat rate. Here’s what you need to know:
- Hourly rate: $150–$250 per hour is standard in Sydney, though top-tier artists may charge $300+
- Minimum charge: Most studios charge a minimum fee of $100–$150 regardless of size
- Custom design fee: Some artists may add a consultation or design fee if the work is highly detailed
Average Tattoo Prices in Sydney by Size
| Size | Estimated Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small (under 5cm) | $100–$200 | Single-session pieces like initials, symbols |
| Medium (5–10cm) | $200–$400 | Forearm or shoulder designs |
| Large (half-sleeve or thigh) | $600–$1,200+ | May require multiple sessions |
| Full back or sleeve | $2,000–$5,000+ | Often spread across months |
What Affects Tattoo Cost in Sydney?
The final price can vary based on:
- Artist experience and reputation – Senior artists with long waitlists typically charge more
- Complexity and style – Realism, portrait work, and fine-line designs require more time and skill
- Body placement – Areas that are harder to tattoo (like ribs or knees) may be more expensive
- Colour vs. blackwork – Colour tattoos often take longer and may cost more
Are Cheap Tattoos Worth It?
It might be tempting to choose a lower-priced studio, but in tattooing, you get what you pay for. Cheaper options often cut corners on hygiene, ink quality, or artist experience — all of which can affect your health and the long-term appearance of the tattoo.
In Sydney, all professional tattoo studios must comply with NSW Health regulations, including skin penetration licensing and sterilisation procedures. You can learn more about that here.
